The Late, Dr. Michelle B. Releford served Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) as Dean of University College and Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs. During her time at WSSU, Michelle developed several programs to ensure the personal and professional development of the students she served.
Most notably, Dr. Releford is noted for enhancing and expanding the first-year orientation week known as “Ramdition.” As a part of Ramdition, Dr. Releford also instituted the “Through the Archway,” a rites of passage ceremony, culminating the orientation experience nd officially welcoming students to the university community - this program continues today. Since 2009, each first-year student that participates in Ramdition has had the opportunity to walk through cobblestone archways, marking their transition from “lambs” to“rams.” Dr. Releford is to credit for the rites of passage ceremony and for many other programs and initiatives created to assist students in their academic, professional, and personal development. In addition to her career as a higher education administrator, Michelle also owned Insightful Concepts, an independent educational consulting firm.
Dr. Releford departed this life on November 8, 2011 at the age of 56.
